Quantitative Data: Between 2022 and 2024, the community tourism project was consolidated as a space for learning and collaboration. In addition to capacity building, volunteer support, and visibility, this project promotes exchange among local enterprises.

Achievements:

  1. 121 organizations participated throughout the execution of the project.

  2. 332 people were trained.

  3. 17 training processes were carried out.

  4. 147 women participated in the process.

  5. 62 volunteers supported the community tourism project.

  6. Currently, through the project “Strengthening of community organizations for the development of responsible and sustainable tourism,” support is provided to organizations with the goal of improving and optimizing their organizational and tourism capacity.

Within the framework of this 2025–2027 project, six organizations with a focus on community tourism in the Western Highlands (Altiplano Occidental) of Guatemala are being supported. They are:

  1. Asociación Maya de Pequeños Agricultores (Maya Small Farmers Association), Colomba Costa Cuca, Quetzaltenango.

  2. Asociación de Agricultores y Ecoturismo para el Desarrollo Integral Chicúa (ASAEDICH) (Farmers and Ecotourism Association for Integral Development Chicúa), Quetzaltenango.

  3. Asociación Parcialidad Caxaj (Caxaj Parciality Association), Totonicapán.

  4. Asociación Sostenible para el Desarrollo Integral y Turístico de Loma Linda (ASODILL) (Sustainable Association for the Integral and Touristic Development of Loma Linda), Loma Linda, El Palmar, Quetzaltenango.

  5. Instituto Mesoamericano de Permacultura (IMAP) (Mesoamerican Permaculture Institute), San Lucas Tolimán, Sololá.

  6. Asociación de Desarrollo Agroforestal Integral Sostenible (ADAFIS) (Sustainable Integral Agroforestry Development Association), Unión La Reforma, Sibinal, San Marcos.

Services Offered: The supported organizations offer the following tourism services:

  1. Asociación Maya de Pequeños Agricultores, Colomba Costa Cuca, Quetzaltenango. Promotes community historical tourism. Through the life stories of their members and events related to the guerrilla in Guatemala, they have created a museum within the farm, offer a coffee tour, and work on forest conservation, which includes a waterfall that is also a natural attraction.

  2. Asociación de Agricultores y Ecoturismo para el Desarrollo Integral Chicúa (ASAEDICH), Quetzaltenango. Promotes ecotourism through the conservation of natural and cultural heritage in a territory considered a sacred place. Its main attraction is Cerro La Muela.

  3. Asociación Parcialidad Caxaj, Totonicapán. Promotes the Caballo Blanco Ecological Park, a natural space that encompasses four hectares of coniferous forest. The park features hiking trails and viewpoints.

  4. Asociación Sostenible para el Desarrollo Integral y Turístico de Loma Linda (ASODILL), Loma Linda, El Palmar, Quetzaltenango. Promotes community development through ecotourism, with a focus on biodiversity conservation in Loma Linda village. Its main tourist attractions include natural pools and waterfalls, a birdwatching route, areas for extreme sports, as well as tours from Loma Linda to the Chicabal Volcano lagoon.

  5. Instituto Mesoamericano de Permacultura (IMAP), San Lucas Tolimán, Sololá. Promotes sustainable tourism through its project “Santuario de las Aves” (Bird Sanctuary), a forest conservation zone. In this area, it is possible to spot the Slender Sheartail hummingbird, an emblematic species of the region.

  6. Asociación de Desarrollo Agroforestal Integral Sostenible (ADAFIS), Unión La Reforma, Sibinal, San Marcos. Promotes rural community and sustainable forest resource tourism in Unión Reforma, Sibinal, San Marcos. It is recognized as one of the best places for Horned Guan birdwatching. It features a viewpoint that offers impressive scenic views of the Tajumulco and Tacaná volcanoes.
